Day 83

With absolutely NOTHING on television but a Mets game that wasn’t as close as the score indicating, the dishes done, and a sleeping baby, Miranda and I did what we’d been trying to do for about 12 weeks now — found some time to snuggle.
It was great.  We just made out like we were back in high [...]

Day 82

Some random thoughts and observations before I get into today’s (mis)adventure…
* I can only hope that anyone who claims to be a “baseball fan” watched the Mets and Giants do battle last night on ESPN.  If not, you missed the following:
1. Armando Benitez choking AGAIN in a game than involved the Mets.  In fact, his [...]

Day 81

On any given day, Anna can be heard from New York City to Bejing during the hours of 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. EST.  Tonight, though, there is silence.
Did we give her a mild sedative?  Did we duct tape her mouth?  Did we provide the world with ear plugs?  While these all have seemed like [...]

Day 80

Miranda and I decided to skip the last BBQ today for three reasons:
* To save what’s left of my insides.
* To save our skin from the sun.
* To spend some QT, just the three of us.
We spend the day lying around the couch, watching cheesy 80s movies, and enjoying the hell out of are air [...]

Day 79

Today, I experienced the greatest thrill of my tenure as a father.
While at BBQ number two this weekend, I went inside with some of my friends to watch the Mets and Yankees games.  Miranda had Anna outside and I could hear Miranda chatting away and Anna cooing.
About thirty minutes later, Anna started to cry and [...]

Day 78

Miranda, Anna, and I went to our first of three BBQs this fine Memorial Day weekend.  This, of course, meant three things for me:
* I would eat too much red meat.
* I would drink too much beer.
* I would do and/or say something to upset Miranda by saying something to upset and/or annoy a guest [...]

Day 77

One of the most uncomfortable things for me to watch is choke jobs.  I cringe whenever I watch that ball roll through Buckner’s legs (although watching this reenactment is pretty funny) or when I think of Barry Goldwater saying “Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice” during the 1964 Republican nominating convention or [...]

Day 76

A few completely unrelated thoughts that I will try to tie into fathering…
1. I’ve given “American Idol” six good years of my life.  Not once have I said “This show is rigged,” until this season.  Seriously, first Melinda gets kicked off, even though she’s the best singer in the competition (I guess only the real [...]

Day 75

I had just returned to my desk from a meeting this morning when this email arrived in my inbox:
From:
Sent: Wednesday, May 23, 2007 9:41 AM
To: Daniel Mencher
Subject: Crib

Attachment: Crib Photo

See attached.
Love you!
It was an email from Miranda (whose email address is blacked out for obvious reasons).  I opened the attachment and there it was:

The crib was [...]

Day 74

Tuesday, May 22, 2007
As has become a routine, I spend about 30 minutes each morning with Anna.  Miranda gets to take a nice shower, I get to eat breakfast and watch the news, and Anna gets to spend some time with me, the second most important man in her life (you know, since she’s baptised [...]
